Update on the Teacher Work Stoppage

Dear Haynes Family,


At this time, the potential work stoppage for teachers is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 14th. If that happens, school will remain open; however our LAUSD teachers will all participate in the work stoppage. The District has assigned a few administrators from various offices to Haynes to assist in providing an instructional program for our students. Along with that support, we are expected to also have the services of our office staff, cafeteria workers, custodial staff, campus aides, teacher assistants and supervision aides. Since the majority of those staff members do not hold teaching credentials, most of the day will be spent in large open spaces where I, along with other credentialed employees, can monitor and supervise all students. That modified program will consist of rotations approximately 55 minutes each. Students will be kept in grade levels, and the rotations will consist of the following:

Your child’s safety and well-being will be our top priority during the work stoppage. We will work tirelessly to make sure your children are cared for and engaged in every activity as we strive to keep their instructional days as normal as possible under the circumstances. However, there will definitely be some changes to our regular operations that I want you all to be aware of in the event of a strike.


School Schedule & After School Programs

We will have the same schedule during the strike. School will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at

2:30 p.m. each day with the exception of Tuesdays when school ends at 1:30 p.m. After school, the YS, YMCA & Enrichment programs will all operating on their regular schedules.


Our school intervention program will not be operating during the strike.


Kiss and Drop Off

The morning valet program on Haynes St. will not be operating during the strike. Teachers are expected to be picketing on the side walk. As a result, all parents are encouraged to come early and park in the neighborhood to drop off their children. The front gate on Lockhurst Drive will be open along with the Haynes St. gate. If you choose to drop off your child at these gates you should expect that area to be busy!



Drop-off & Pick-up

During the duration of the strike the Kinder gate will remain locked. It is recommended that the TK/Kinder students come to the front gate to enter the school.  All students will report in the morning to our school’s auditorium, including TK/Kinder students.TK/Kinder students will be dismissed from the auditorium. As always, the TK/Kinder students must be picked up by an adult, 18 years or older.


Reminder Haynes is still a closed campus. All visitors must sign in at the office.


PAL’s students will be dropped off and picked up in the PAL’s classroom.


All students in grades 1-5 will be dismissed from the playground line-up area.


Students with Special Needs

Members of my office staff will monitor all students who receive medication at school to ensure that those schedules continue. In addition, we will also keep track of those students who require extra support during the school day. We will do our best to ensure that those students with the greatest needs are provided that assistance.


Recess & Lunch

Students will continue to receive a 20 minute recess break in the morning and a 45 minute lunch break in the afternoon. During the strike, we will remain on our regular schedule for recess and lunch. Our cafeteria will continue to provide meals for students who purchase food at school.


Inclement Weather

In the event of inclement weather, we will be forced to move all students to the auditorium.
